SUPPORTING EVERY FAMILY: MARKING FAITH, CULTURE AND FIRST MOMENTS ON THE UNIT
At Tiny Lives, we know that every family’s journey is unique, shaped not only by their baby’s neonatal experience, but also by their culture, faith and the moments that matter most to them.
We know that holiday periods can be hard when you are navigating life on the neonatal unit, and that’s why we are working to support families from all faiths in marking important celebrations with their new addition.
Working closely with the RVI’s Family Integrated Care (FiCare) group, a multi-faith calendar has been developed to recognise key religious festivals throughout the year and Tiny Lives has funded the printing of this calendar, along with a range of celebration cards which families can choose from, creating a meaningful keepsake to mark their baby’s very first special occasions.
These small but powerful gestures help families feel seen, supported and connected to what matters most to them, even during a challenging time.
Over the last month we have celebrated Ramadan, Eid, Holi and Hola Mohalla alongside Easter celebrations in the coming weeks.
By recognising these occasions, the neonatal team can support families in ways that are both practical and personal – whether that’s through signposting, quiet acknowledgement, or simply ensuring families feel able to observe their faith in a way that feels right for them.
The multi-faith calendar is part of a wider commitment across the unit to create an inclusive and compassionate environment for all. From providing thoughtful resources to supporting individual needs, the focus is always on ensuring families feel respected, understood and cared for.
Alongside the multi-faith calendar, families are also signposted to trusted organisations and specialist support where they may have questions linked to their faith or personal circumstances. For example, mams observing Ramadan may have concerns about breastfeeding or expressing while fasting, and the team can guide them towards appropriate, evidence-based advice and culturally sensitive support. This ensures parents feel informed, reassured and able to make the choices that are right for them and their baby, with access to guidance that respects both their health needs and their beliefs.
For many parents, these early days with their baby are filled with uncertainty. Being able to mark a holiday or cultural celebration and take home a card to remember it can bring comfort, connection and a sense of normality during an otherwise overwhelming time.
At Tiny Lives, we’re proud to play a role in making those moments possible and if you would like to support our work to create memories for even more families on the unit, please visit our Donate page or understand how and how your business can get involved: https://www.tinylives.org.uk/corporate/
