NICU Awareness Month: Navigating the NICU in a Different Language

Having a baby in neonatal care can be overwhelming for any parent.
There are new routines to learn, medical information to understand, important decisions to make, and constant concern for your baby’s wellbeing.

For parents whose first language is not English, these challenges can be even greater.

Understanding complex medical terminology, communicating with healthcare professionals, asking questions, and processing information during an already stressful and emotional time can leave families feeling isolated or uncertain. Language barriers can make it harder for parents to feel fully informed and confident in their baby’s care at a time when clear communication matters most.

At Tiny Lives, we’re committed to ensuring that every family can access the support they need, regardless of their language, background or circumstances.

As part of our 2024-2029 Strategy, we’re prioritising support for families who are currently under-represented within our services, starting with families who do not speak English as a first language, alongside bereaved families and younger parents. By listening to families’ needs, embracing digital innovation, and offering greater choice in how families engage with our services, we aim to make our support more accessible and inclusive.

As part of this commitment, we’ve developed our Communication Cards, designed to help families communicate more easily during their neonatal journey and feel more confident accessing the support available to them.

This NICU Awareness Month, we’re recognising the additional challenges some families face and reaffirming our commitment to ensuring that every family feels welcomed, heard and supported.

Because every family deserves to understand, to be understood, and to feel part of their baby’s care.
