Harry’s Story

On Unit: 12/04/21 – 14/06/21
Gestation: 23 weeks +3

In loving memory of Harry.

Claire kindly shares her son Harry’s story below.

‘Harry was on the unit for 9 weeks before sadly passing away. During his time on the ward, he unfortunately had several infections and abdominal surgery for suspected NEC, but he fought through that to become fully fed and required no cannulas or long lines, all his medication became oral!

Unfortunately, he became poorly again and this time his little body wasn’t able to fight any longer. Harry passed away on the 14th June, cradled in Mummy’s arms.’

How did Tiny Lives impact your time on the unit?

‘Tiny Lives helped to make the experience of having a baby in special care easier. The parking permit allowed us to visit him every day without the added financial implications of that. We received sibling packs for our little girls back home to explain to them about their brother and why he wasn’t home. After he passed, the sibling bears were lovely to give to the girls from their brother.

The first time I saw my baby open his eyes was through a photo that was sent to me via vCreate and I will treasure this forever. Having that facility on the unit is invaluable for parents.

I will be forever thankful to Ward 35 and its staff for giving myself and my husband 9 precious weeks with our baby boy.’
