The Mam’s Group is made up of Mams who have all been through the Neonatal journey on Ward 35, and who volunteer their time to support Mams who are currently on the Ward or recently discharged. They’re a friendly bunch, so don’t be afraid to get in touch!
My name is Rachel and I’m Mum to Arthur, a nutty, rampaging 3 year old who was born at 29 weeks. We spent 10 weeks on the Neonatal Unit in 2017/18 and were very lucky in that Arthur never needed any treatments or surgeries but he just needed to grow. You tend to ‘just get on with it’ when you’re a parent on the SCBU and changing nappies through incubator portholes, kangaroo cuddles and beeping machines becomes your normal. But it isn’t ‘normal’ at all and everyone needs some support or time out. Looking back to our time on the SCBU, I can see now that we often felt like visitors and not parents, so I hope that in being a buddy I can help other parents to not to feel that way and offer some much deserved support and solidarity
My name is Riane. I was on the RVI Neonatal Unit with my son in 2016, because he was born 11 weeks prematurely. I developed severe Pre-eclampsia, which meant he was born at 29 weeks. I wanted to become a Peer Supporter to help other parents who find themselves on the Unit, and help them in any way I can! The Unit can be a daunting place, but a few friendly faces make all the difference.
